KARO - New Zealand Native -Very frost hardy species, oblong to oval leaves are dark green and leathery, grayish white, felted undersides.  Clusters of fragrant star shaped, reddish purple flowers are borne in spring and are followed by greenish oval fruit which are fleshy and the birds enjoy the seeds within the fruit.  Very tolerant of coastal conditions, sea spray, and dryness, needs a sunny open aspect. Will grow under pine trees quite successfully. Can be used as a hedge. Height  8m x 3-4m.
